What do chocolate chip cookies and nursing have in common? They require skill and attention. Just ask Dallas Louis. She is an expert in the kitchen (particularly when it comes to baking) and she’s a nurse who is committed to her patients.

“I have always wanted to provide care to people,” said Dallas Louis. “You can see the difference you make in their lives, plus we see patients from start to finish. I like to have a hand in why someone is getting well.”

Nursing is a second career for Dallas. She began her career working in a lab focused on immunotherapy. Since then, she has gone back to school to receive her BSN and MSN from Clayton State University. While getting her degrees, she continued to work and help patients.

Through her career, Dallas has experience in numerous areas of the profession. She has spent two years in surgical nursing and three years in L&D.

“I like the fact that I can do anything in this field,” she said. “I like the flexibility and seeing many different types of patient care. As a nurse, I want to provide care to people and make their lives better.”
That love of nursing led her to become a Nurse Practitioner. She found out about the NoGAPP program from a friend and knew instantly that it would be a good fit.

“When I looked into it, I thought it would be a good fit for me,” she said. “There is a structured program that would help guide me to being a nurse practitioner. It’s a completely different role than I’ve had before.”

And it’s an important role for the community. Dallas understands the challenges and opportunities for the NoGAPP program. She will be able to provide valuable care to underserved communities, showing that nursing can make a tangible impact on the lives of patients.

“I can provide primary care from a nursing perspective,” she said. “You get a different type of care from a nurse. You have a more holistic approach. In my personal life, I’ve seen nurse practitioners for my healthcare and know the quality of the care provided. I wanted to provide that same level of care to patients.”
